Mackay is perhaps best known as a great fishing destination. Our particular location means we get the best of both northern and southern fish species, giving anglers a lot of choices!

Boats leave from Mackay Marina, or you might want to try the marina’s breakwater, or Pioneer River for some whiting or flathead. There are also many well-stocked local dams, including Kinchant, Teemburra and Eungella.

A little further afield there’s Cape Hillsborough, Seaforth, and the Newry Island Group.

Bluewater Trail

Hi-Way Units Motel is situated right on the Bluewater Trail, with is a long biking and walking trail that snakes through Mackay. Enjoy the local wildlife and plants, go for a jog, or just take in the view!

Botanical Gardens

Right opposite Hi-Way Units Motel are the Mackay Botanical Gardens, which feature a wide array of native plants and lots of places to walk, sit, or relax with a hot or cold drink.

Beach swimming

There are over 30 beautiful beaches to choose from around Mackay, many of which are just a few minutes’ drive from Hi-Way Units Motel. We recommend Bucasia Beach, Seaforth Beach and Halliday Bay as these are netted to protect against stingers.

Bluewater Lagoon

Bluewater Lagoon offers free family-friendly leisure. Overlooking the Pioneer River in Mackay’s city centre, the facility has the equivalent of three 50m pools of space, along with numerous slides, playgrounds and BBQ facilities.

Bush walking and National Parks

The Eungella and Cape Hillsborough National Parks offer great bushwalks and natural wonders, with lots of wild flora and fauna to take in. Take a hike up one of the many walking tracks to see the beautiful beaches, gorges and rainforest that make Mackay famous!

Artspace Mackay

This is a regional art gallery owned and operated by the local council. It showcases local and indigenous art, with guided tours and workshops offering some worthwhile engagement for all the family.
